Mr. George Casey Gable's Obituary
Mr. George Casey Gable, 90, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Fairhaven Skilled Nursing Facility in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born on January 1, 1935, in Winterboro, Alabama to Charlie and Grace Burton Gable. The youngest of 7 children, they
struggled to survive as sharecroppers and tragedy hit, when both parents died within
months of each other, leaving the 7 children homeless. With no welfare agencies or
foster homes, the children ended up in 7 different places, with George the youngest
displaced by a local family who took him in. Finally, his sister Hattie Gable Lee was to
be married and asked her betrothed if he would be willing to foster and welcome her
little brother, George, into their home. He agreed, and the rest is his life story.
He is preceded in death by his precious wife: Mable Gibson Gable and their infant son,
Christopher. He is the last living sibling, survived by nieces: April Adams Collier (Eddie & Heather), Wanda Lee Causey (Billy), Brenda Lee Rice (Michael); nephew: Frank “Tony” Ferguson and many other nieces and nephews.
His world revolved around his 77-acre farm, where he provided land for crops of soy
beans, wheat, corn and hay for over 45 years. He kept his property well-manicured
and set a high standard of respect for the soil and the earth, always struggling to save
and protect the land. Being a widow for many years, living alone had him set in his
ways and sometimes argumentative, but a good neighbor, willing to help anyone and he had a Christian giving spirit. After his retirement from the Anniston Army Depot, he was able to fish and work on his farm enjoying his privacy and solitude, but stayed connected to family and friends, whether shelling pecans with Mrs. Dorsett or spending time with Mike Crow. There are memories of hard work and adventures there, both good and bad. Finally, it is time for him to rest. He was with us for 90 years and our Lord kept him here for many reasons. Those close to him in their daily walk, saw miracles and purpose during his
last years and know he now can rest in our Saviors Arms. Psalm 23.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 1:00pm-2:00pm in the Talladega Funeral Home Chapel for visitation. The service will follow in the chapel at 2:00pm with Rev. Harold Payne officiating. Burial will be at Pine Hill Memorial Park with William Causey, Shaun Caldwell, Michael Rice, Gregory Rice and Eddie Collier serving as pallbearers.
