Mr. Jere Lane "Fig" Ferrell's Obituary
Alpine-Jere Lane “Fig” Ferrell passed away on September 22, 2021, at his home in Alpine. He was 54.
Fig was born to Jere Alan and Margie Ferrell, the middle of three sons. He had a rambunctious and adventurous spirit from the start. His first nickname of “Linus” was assigned in his toddlerhood due to his affection for his blanket that he carried around everywhere. This nickname later took a backseat to “Fig”, given his love for the famous cookie bar and its commercial slogan, “The Big Fig”.
He is remembered for his fierce loyalty to family and friends. He had a heart of gold, wrapped in a tough exterior. He had an unmatched comedic wit. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, history buff, firearm enthusiast, and Alabama football fan. He had a tender heart, a stubborn streak, and the best bear hug in town. He was truly one of a kind. He spent the majority of his career as a logger with the family business but had followed his passion for marksmanship and gunsmithing at CMP Marksmanship Park in Talladega for the past several years.
Although he had no children of his own, he was a father figure to many. He was completely devoted to his nephews, nieces, younger cousins, and children of close friends. His mission was to make sure their childhoods were full of the great outdoors, sharing his wealth and knowledge about many things along the way. Whoever met Fig left with a new piece of information or insight, and likely some sort of good food. Fig professed his faith in Christ and was baptized in Talladega Springs as a child.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ferrell and Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Smith; his mother, Margie Smith Ferrell; and his brother, Lee Ferrell, Sr.
He is survived by his father, Jere A.(Patricia) Ferrell; his brother Alan(Evonne) Ferrell; his aunt Laney Ferrell; his nephew Lee (Mari Jen) Ferrell, Jr.; his nephew Matthew (Hannah) Ferrell; his niece Mary (Dylan) Longino; his niece Trinity Ferrell, and a myriad of cousins, extended family, and friends that he considered family.
The family and Ladies’ Ministry of Trinity Lighthouse Church will host a memorial service at 6750 Renfroe Road on October 2, 2021, from 12:00PM until 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his honor (stjude.org).
