Ms. Florence Gannaway Burton's Obituary
Florence Gannaway Burton passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2016 at the age of 101.
She was born on 25 Nov 1914 to Charlie and Maggie Powell Gannaway, who both passed away on the same day in October 1918 from the Influenza Pandemic. She and her younger brother, Guy Gannaway, were raised by their Gannaway grandparents. She persevered to graduate from Munford high school in 1934 as Valedictorian. On November 10th of that year, she married the love of her life, Benjamin Albert Burton. They began a life together that spanned over 55 years until his death on 13 Apr 1990.
She worked hard all of her life and was always in a hurry. She loved tending to her vegetable garden, as well as cooking and sharing what it produced. Some of her happiest years were those spent working in the lunchroom at Lincoln school. She was a member of Coldwater Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 8 PM at Talladega Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Hall Cemetery in Lincoln Saturday at 1 PM. Friends are welcome to meet at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 11 AM.
Ms. Burton is preceded in death by her husband: Benjamin “Albert” Burton; her brother and sister-in-law: Guy Laney and Ruby Nelson Gannaway; daughter Ruby Jean Link, and her daughter and son-in-law: Patsye and A.E. “Flute” Henderson.
She is survived by her children: Dr. Joseph C. Burton (Barbara), Richard L. Burton(Ronna), Loretta Williams (Danny), and Judy Wood (Jack); her son-in-law: Bill Link; grandchildren: Wes Link (Donna), Greg Link(Karen), David Link (Karen), Ricky Henderson, Ronny Henderson(Becky), Brian Burton(Gaile), Barry Burton (Randy Johnson), Mendy Burton, Tata Williams, Andy Wood(Dana), Audrey Widner(Clint); 11 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hall Cemetery Fund to support the perpetual care of the cemetery. Please make checks payable to Hall Cemetery Fund and mail to Refuge Baptist Church, P.O. Box 174, Lincoln, AL 35096.
Pallbearers will be Ricky and Ronny Henderson, Clint Widner, Shorty Freeman, Clint Morrow and Nathan Coppock.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Curry Station Inn for providing loving care to our mother during these last months of her life.
