Charley Gilliland's Obituary
Funeral Services for Charley L. Gilliland, 82 of Talladega, will be Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 2 pm at Talladega Funeral Home with Cliff Goodwin officiating and burial following at Pine Hill Cemetry. The family will be accepting friends Friday night from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Charley was born in Auburn, GA on May 19, 1929. A resident of Talladega all of his adult life, he retired as a welder from Crown Textile. After retirement, Charley went to work for Talladega Superspeedway as a security guard where he had been employed for the past twenty years. Charley loved Nascar racing, the Atlanta Braves, and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was a member of the Ironaton Church of Christ. He is preceded in death by his wife Willene Stephens Allen Gilliland, his parents Henry and Dora Ethridge Gilliland of Auburn, GA, six sisters, and three brothers.
Charley is survived by his four daughters Derenda Bishop and her husband Scotty, Rita Williams and her husband Rodney, Carol Duncan of Talladega, and Draima Whitmire and husband Rick of Cullman. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Tonya Griffin and husband David, Beth Goodwin and husband Cliff, Thad Biship, Selena Sanderson and husband Derek, Kim Brewer and husband Josh, Jared Duncan, Allen Scheihl, and Todd Schiehl, twelve great grandchildren, his sister Betty Brady and husband Lawson of Cornelia, GA, two brothers Roy Gilliland and wife Delia of Cleveland, GA, and Quinton Gilliland of Hoschton, GA.
The following grandsons will act as pallbearers: Thad Bishop, Jared Duncan, Allen Schiehl, Todd Schiehl, David Griffin, and nephew Mike Gilliland. The family would also like to recognize the members of Ironaton Church of Christ and the employees of Talladega Superspeedway as honorary pallbearers.
Talladega Funeral Home will direct the services.
