Barbara Hicks Munroe's Obituary
Funeral services for Ms. Barbara June Hicks-Munroe will be Sunday, August 26, 2012, at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Patton Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Mrs. Munroe's second nephew, Morey Gaddy will serve to minister in word & song; he will share one of his aunt's favorite songs, "Some Call It Heaven; I Call It Home" and close his reflections with "It Is Well With My Soul".
Mrs. Munroe is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cecil B. Munroe Jr.; her parents, Elbert and Alice Erwin-Hicks, brother Harold Hicks; sister, Helen Hicks-Penny and nephew, Jerry Penny. Mrs. Munroe is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Munroe-Hazel; son, Cecil "Butch" Munroe III and son-in-love, Billy W. Hazel along with her sister, Hazel Hicks-Jacobs and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Munroe was born two days before Christmas 1932 during the height of The Great Depression in her cherished Roy Webb rural homeplace - the youngest of four siblings. Her work ethic & deep, abiding faith was honed in those early years by walking & tending the fields side by side with her parents & siblings picking cotton and sitting down around the dinner table at night as her father said grace over the blessing of being able to provide food for their family yet one more day.
She left this earth headed to her eternal reward at 3 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2012. Barbara was 79 years old. We, her heirs have very large shoes to fill indeed in feebly attempting to emulate her witness and legacy. She was so very much loved by all those who truly knew her because she always concerned herself with others first - even at the very end.
Her passions were intensely tied to her faith, numerous volunteer activities and our family farm. She lived her entire adult life working at Anniston Army Depot while simultaneously witnessing in both word & deed to those she came in contact.
She and her husband taught numerous Sunday School classes, Training Union, WMU not to mention her 50 years within Lincoln Baptist serving on pulpit committees, finance committees & adult choir. She served in various capacities within the Lincoln Quest Club for over two decades, NAARF Talladega Chapter, Patton Chapel Cemetery Secretary-Treasurer, Talladega County Farmers' Federation Womens' Committee, Talladega Cattlemen's Cowbelles, Samaritan House, FoodShare, and many other activities.
She never missed an opportunity to encourage those that felt there was no hope, to cheer up those saddened by life and these things are what bring us comfort now and surely in the days and weeks to come. We will sorely miss her boundless compassion, sense of humor, her unconditional love and concern for EVERYONE she came in contact with but will pray for God to use those seeds of faith to bear much fruit in not only our lives but all those she touched.
The best way to honor those we lose to the ravages of death is to live . . . truly live in a way that represents everything they taught us along the way. This is our heartfelt desire at this hour for others to see mom in us.
The following men will serve as pallbearers: Steve Jacobs, Kenny Ray Ford, Stanley Ford, Mark Alldredge, Jay Hackney and Keaton Rogers. We would also like
to recognize the following people as honorary pallbearers: all extended members of the Munroe and Hicks Families, all those from Alacare who blessed us with their service, and all committees and volunteer groups with whom Mom served.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Patton Chapel Community Cemetery Fund; 2800 Patton Chapel Rd, Lincoln, AL 35096.
