Mr. Andras Bundy Kovacs' Obituary
Lincoln-Mr. Andras Kovacs, beloved father, Hungarian freedom fighter, and proud American, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2024, in his home In Lincoln, Alabama, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on May 3, 1936, in Kany, Hungary, Andras led a remarkable live defined by courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his ideals. As a young man, he courageously fought for freedom in Hungary and later joined the US Army after being recruited while recovering from wounds in a German hospital. He became a Ranger and served his new country with honor and distinction.
During his time stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, Andras crossed paths with the love of his life, Alice Faye Cleveland, whom he married after a memorable meeting over Christmas leave. Their union was blessed with three children: Glendell, Tawania , and Andras.
In 1963, Andras proudly became a Naturalized US Citizen, a testament to his deep commitment to his adopted homeland. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, the family lived in various places, including New Jersey and New Orleans, before settling in Lincoln, Alabama, where Andras began a fulfilling career with Southern Railroad in 1971. He dedicated 30 years of service to the railroad company, retiring in 2001.
Even in retirement, Andras continued to serve his community and country through his involvement with numerous non-profit organizations, embodying the spirit of selflessness and generosity.
Andras loved to dance on the senior outings. He loved to garden, especially his flowers. He loved New York Mets baseball and LSU football, but he loved his children most of all. He was a proud member of the Talladega County Democratic party and attended regular meetings.
Andras, fondly known as Andy to his friends, faced his final battle with cancer with the same bravery and grace that defined his life. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Alice Faye, in eternal peace.
Andras Kovacs is preceded in death by his parents: Gyula and Maria Kovacs. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering patriotism. He will be deeply missed by his children Glendell, Tawania, and Andras, as well as his cherished grandsons Andras, Julius, Virgil, and Herschel. Though he may have left this world, his spirit and influence will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Thank you Father, for your extraordinary life and the profound impact you had on those around you. You were not only loved but admired and respected beyond measure.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 9:30am-10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 722 East St. South, Talladega, AL. The Funeral Mass will follow at the Church at 10:00am.
Interment will be at Alabama National Cemetery. Talladega Funeral Home will direct the service.
